When Things Get Hard, Say This

"It's not if things get hard, it's when things get hard. There's always a low point or multiple low points. When that happens, I just remind myself that I paid for this. I chose to be here. I trained for this." - Jeff Pelletier on The Extramilest Show #119

Jeff Pelletier is an ultra runner and filmmaker from Vancouver. He shares mental strategies that work for any distance, from 5Ks to marathons to ultras. We explore how to push through low points, problem-solve when things go wrong, and why the hardest moments often become the most meaningful.

We also discuss my experiences pacing / crewing Jeff at Badwater 135, where we experienced plenty of highs and lows together.

My new book Running Breakthroughs is now available worldwide as Audio Book, autographed book and eBook.

2 of many important lessons from my conversation with Jeff Pelletier:

1. About Problem-Solving Over Perfection

"It's not about doing everything perfectly. It's about having enough tools in your toolbox to tackle all of the problems that inevitably will come up."

2. About The Purpose of Struggle

"It's that moment. It's not to avoid that moment and to get to the other side as quickly as possible. It's to live in that moment and test myself. See how I do. If it wasn't for that moment, I don't think I would enjoy the experience as much, or at least it wouldn't be as rewarding in hindsight."

This run became something much bigger than a 50K. Running the Grand Canyon with marathon legend Ryan Hall, alongside friends from Believe in the Run, Mount to Coast and Path Projects… humbling, epic, and one I won’t forget. Long miles. Relentless heat. Big climbs. And a few cold river and waterfall plunges to survive it all. Our route was South Kaibab → Phantom Ranch → Ribbon Falls → back out. This 12 minute YouTube video gives a good summary of the day. I can highly recommend this route for...
